Fire Chief Brian Fennessy

Brian Fennessy was appointed Fire Chief for the City of San Diego on September 3, 2015 and confirmed by the City Council on September 22, 2015. He was sworn into office on November 12, 2015.

Chief Fennessy joined the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department as a fire fighter in 1990, and progressed through the ranks of the Department. He became the Assistant Chief of Support Services in 2009.

As the Assistant Fire Chief, Fennessy was responsible for Logistics areas of the Department for all Fire, Emergency Medical and Lifeguard Services, including Personnel, Budget, Fleet, Facilities, Fire Prevention, Dispatch, and Information Technology Services.

In 2012, Fennessy was named Assistant Chief of Emergency Operations and led and managed the largest divisions within the Department. This command includes the Operations Division (all 48 fire stations & assigned personnel), the Emergency Medical Services Division, the Special Operations Division, and the Lifeguard Division.

Prior to joining the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, Fennessy served as a U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management wildland firefighter and crew supervisor for thirteen years. As a firefighter, Chief Fennessy traveled throughout the United States battling wildfires from the air and ground. While with these two agencies he led, managed, and supervised hotshot crews, engine crews and helicopter crews.

As Chief, he directs a department of more than 1200 firefighters, lifeguards, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and civilian personnel with a budget just under $220,000,000. His salary is approximately $166,000.
