Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Program

AMI Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) uses radio-based technology to read water meters, thus eliminating the need for manual meter reads. The Public Utilities Department will be testing this technology in San Diego during our Initial Implementation Program.

In the Initial Implementation Program, approximately 11,000 meters will be fitted with AMI transmitters. About 10,000 of these meters are larger meters which are read and billed monthly. These meters provide service to our multi-family, commercial and industrial customers. These are the highest volume users and the meters which are the most difficult to read. Some are located in canyons, alleys, vaults in the street, etc.

In addition to the customers with monthly bills, approximately 1,000 single-family residential customers in the Rancho Bernardo area will be included in the Initial Implementation Program. These customers were chosen because they all lie within one pressure zone so evaluating the benefits for these customers will be easier.

The AMI technology will benefit our customers by providing customers with more detailed real-time data and better tools to conserve water. It will also make the Public Utilities Department more efficient and cost-effective by reducing expenses. (For more information, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions.)

Once the system is in place and has been thoroughly tested, these customers will be provided a web portal where they can track and review their water use data.

Any decisions on expanding the AMI technology will be made after a study of the data obtained during the Initial Implementation Program.
